Govt admits 4 GGMC employees died

first_img… ascertaining potential link with mercury poisoning Following reports in the media of the recent deaths of four Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) workers that could be mercury related, the Natural Resources Ministry has confirmed the deaths. The deceased staffers are: Dwayne De Jonge (ranger), Latchman Chiti (surveyor), Leroy Green (carpenter) and Clement Proffit (lab technician).According to the Ministry in a statement, it has received no official or formal report indicating that the men – who this publication understands all died this year – were victims of the mercury contamination that has plagNatural Resources Minister Raphael Trotmanued the GGMC compound over the past few months.“The Ministry of Natural Resources will await a report to this effect from the GGMC and will again engage the workers about any grievances that may exist. Further, there is simply no existing empirical data which establish that mercury is responsible for the deaths of miners and GGMC workers in recent times.”However, the Ministry did admit that efforts are in train to scientifically establish whether there is a link.“No effort and no expense will be spared in pursuit of the truth and the protection of the workers,” the Ministry said. The Ministry’s admission of the employees’ death came after the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Friday questioned the death of the four employees while in a public statement expressed condolence to the relatives of the deceased staffers.According to the PPP, the issue is one that must be addressed urgently by the relevant authorities. The Party also raised possible links to the mercury poisoning that had afflicted workers at the GGMC during amalgam burning exercises. According to the PPP, all four men were documented to have been affected by mercury poisoning.“These four deaths, which follow each other in such a short period of time, should be a cause for serious concern. It is disturbing that the Government and the GGMC have been reluctant to inform the staff and public about actions taken to ensure protection of not only staffers, but also those in surrounding communities,” the party said.“This is not a political issue,” the party had stressed. “The PPP will support the Government of Guyana to ensure that every effort is made to guarantee the health and safety of our people. We therefore urge immediate action by the relevant authorities including management of the GGMC and the Ministry of Public Health, to ensure the occupational health and safety standards are in place.”According to the Party, precautionary measures such as testing and treatment for all staff must be operationalised by the GGMC and the Public Health Ministry. The cost for this, the party advised, should be borne by GGMC.Mercury and effects on humansFollowing the discovery of high levels of mercury in its laboratory, which is in the GGMC compound, the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) had contracted the services of Trinidad-based Kaizen Environmental Services to conduct an independent investigation of the effect of the emission, and that company has said the mercury levels are back to normal.According to the report, the study was conducted on March 28 at 10 locations, primarily located within the Guyana Geology and Mines Commissions’ compound and the surrounding areas.“The Mercury (Hg) levels monitored at all 10 locations were within the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (US OSHA) eight-hour Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL),” the report stated.Out of over 130 staffers tested, it was discovered that more than 60 reported high levels of mercury in their system. Trotman, appearing before the National Assembly’s Natural Resources Committee, had subsequently revealed that the Gold Board had moved its gold burning operations to a private dealer.According to research, the improper handling of Mercury can cause detrimental impacts on anyone, who is exposed to it without proper protection. This toxic poisonous heavy metal, which can induce public health disasters, can lead to horrendous effect on the neurological, reproductive, gastrointestinal and renal organ systems.Research shows that mercury can enter the body through inhalation of mercury vapour, ingestion, injection or even absorption through the skin. In the case of mining personnel, a reading showing levels of 0-6 micro grams per litre is considered safe while 7-10 is high and above 11 dangerous. The inhalation of mercury damages the brain, mercurous salts then forms causing remarkable changes to lining of the gut and kidneys. Once in the human system, mercury poisoning has horrendous effects on neurological, reproductive, gastro intestinal and renal organs. In particular, mercury targets the GI track and kidneys.Acute clinical presentation of mercuric salt poisoning, generally targets the GI tract and kidneys leading to abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea with potential necrosis of the gut mucosa. This may produce death either from peritonitis or from sceptic or hypervolemic shock.Numerous studies have shown the impact of mercury cannot be reversed easily without long-term damage.last_img read more

Half-time: Bees 0 Nottingham Forest 0

first_imgPromotion-chasing Brentford were on top for most of the first half at Griffin Park. They almost took the lead in fortuitous circumstances when Nottingham Forest keeper Karl Darlow slipped and only just managed to clear Kelvin Wilson’s back-pass.Darlow looked much more comfortable keeping out James Tarkowsi’s header and denying Stuart Dallas at the far post following Moses Odubajo’s right-wing cross.Darlow did well again, this time at his near post, to palm away Andre Gray’s powerful shot after the striker had been played in by Odubajo.Jake Bidwell, who was handed the captain’s armband, and Alan Judge then both fired narrowly wide as Brentford kept up the pressure. At the other end, Tarkowski produced a fine challenge to thwart Michail Antonio as the Forest man took aim in the penalty area early on.And just before the break, Tyler Walker, on as a substitute, missed a glorious chance to put the visitors ahead against the run of play when he failed to connect properly with Antonio’s low cross. Brentford: Button, Odubajo, Tarkowski, Dean, Bidwell, Diagouraga, Dallas, Pritchard, Judge, Jota, Gray.Subs: Bonham, Douglas, Craig, Smith, McCormack, Toral, O’Connell.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

The ICC 700 Green Standard’s Energy Requirements Ramp Up

first_imgAfter navigating the educational offerings, the product rollouts, and the more celebratory rituals that accompany the International Builders’ Show, which for three days in January took over the Las Vegas Convention Center, it may have been hard to stay focused, or even awake, once it was all over. But for those trying to up their game in the energy efficiency and green building realms, there was at least one principal takeaway touted by the convention’s host, the National Association of Home Builders, which highlighted the American National Standards Institute’s approval of the 2012 ICC 700 National Green Building Standard for residential construction. Both NAHB and the International Code Council have for several years been partnering on the development, through a consensus process, of the NGBS. The first ANSI-approved iteration of this effort was the 2009 ICC 700 standard, which has four levels of compliance: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald, in ascending order of stringency. Emerald compliance was intended to reduce energy consumption by a projected 65% below estimated energy use achieved by meeting minimal requirements of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).The 2012 version of the ICC 700 standard ups the ante a bit by referencing the 2009 IECC, whose requirements, the NAHB and the ICC say, will increase energy efficiency performance by an estimated 15% over the 2006 version of the IECC. RELATED ARTICLES ANSI Approves NAHB’s Green Building StandardGreen Rating Systems for Home BuildingWhat Is Green Certification, And How Does It Work?Talking the Green Code Talk, but Walking the Walk SlowlyWhat’s Happening to All the Green Building Programs? Pennsylvania Builder Lands NAHB Green’s First Emerald Rating Scoring revisions, and the next IECCThe 2012 ICC 700 also includes two significant sets of changes: revamped scoring criteria for remodeling projects and incentives for choosing lots in developments that have been certified to ICC 700 or an equivalent program. The scoring changes for remodeling projects include criteria, pegged to the specific compliance level being sought, for whole-building improvements in energy efficiency and water efficiency. The ICC 700 update also provides a green protocol for renovations of functional areas of the home, such as the kitchen, bathroom, and basement. While builders certainly can opt to meet energy efficiency performance standards that surpass those identified in the 2009 IECC, it will be a while before the ICC code-development process delivers a fully vetted IECC update. The deadline for submitting code-change proposals for the 2015 IECC was January 3, 2013, with much of the rest of this year devoted to committee actions and public comment. One of the participants in the process is, of course, the Department of Energy, whose website includes a breakdown of the IECC changes it has proposed and, therefore, a preview of where at least some of the 2015 IECC edition might be headed. (The ICC is scheduled to release a compilation of proposed changes on April 1.)In terms of energy efficiency, the DOE proposals focus on subjects such as window performance (relative to building orientation and shading), roof/ceiling resistance to heat gain, a heat-recovery system requirement for mechanical ventilation in colder climates, upgrades to domestic water-heating systems, and sensors for lighting controls. The current version of the ICC 700, meanwhile, is available from NAHB Builder Books for $35.95 ($31.95 for NAHB members).last_img read more

Without a Sales Leader

first_imgYou can try to run a sales organization without a sales leader, but you will never generate the results you are capable of without one. All of the problems and challenges that will prevent you from acquiring clients and growing your revenue will stem from the lack of a leader. It isn’t a good idea to try to build a sales organization without having a leader in place. You can build a sales process designed to help you compel change, create value for your dream clients, and win new business. Without a leader to help salespeople learn, follow, and make adjustments to that process, the process is meaningless, worthless. With a leader, a process can provide an excellent framework for winning new deals. If you want to hire people without providing them a leader, you may as well take the money you would spend on that sales force, pour gasoline on the money, strike a match, and burn the money. Without a leader to set priorities, to set the cadence, to coach and develop them, salespeople will not perform to their true capacity. With a leader, you will have a sales force with priorities, an operating rhythm, and a coach who will improve their skills—and their results.Maybe you will do others have done before you, try to change the process, train the sales force, install a new methodology, or maybe fire the whole sales force and start over. Doing any or all of these will leave you exactly where these decisions have left the entrepreneurs and executive leaders who tried to change everything instead of hiring a leader. They were left in the same place as where they started, namely, lacking a sales leader. It is important to get things in the right order. Without providing the sales force with the leadership they need, you are not giving them a fair chance to succeed. Nor are you giving yourself that same chance. Hire the leader first, and then work on building around them.last_img read more

Brazil coach Tite reserves judgment on Neymar rape accusation

first_imgBrazilian coach Tite on Monday declined to pass judgment on the rape accusation made against the national soccer side’s star Neymar, whose denial of the incendiary allegations have landed him in fresh legal trouble.A woman accused Neymar of raping her at a Paris hotel last month, according to a police report seen by Reuters on Saturday.Tite said he preferred to leave the matter in the hands of investigators and await clarification, adding that he had always enjoyed a good relationship with the soccer star.I do not want to pre-judge, and I prefer to leave the matter to responsible people, he said at a news conference ahead of the upcoming Copa America tournament. We do not yet have the facts clarified and time will give those answers.Tite’s comments marked the first time anyone from Brazil’s Football Federation has addressed the explosive allegations.Sao Paulo state’s public security ministry released a statement confirming the accusation had been made, and said the investigation was still sealed, without giving further details. After news of the accusation surfaced, Neymar posted a long video to Instagram in which he denied all the accusations against him, said he was a victim of extortion, lamented the pain caused to him and his family, and shared WhatsApp messages with the alleged victim, including racy photos he had received. That led police in Rio de Janeiro to open a fresh investigation into whether he had committed a crime by posting the intimate pictures online.advertisementSpeaking with local TV on Monday, Neymar’s father defended the decision to publish the photos.Neymar needed to defend himself quickly, his father said. We didn’t have any choice. I prefer a cyber crime to a rape crime.Brazil are preparing for the Copa America – a tournament played by South America’s 10 national teams – plus invitees Japan and Qatar, kicking off on June 14.Neymar arrived at the camp on Sunday in his personal helicopter, but did not speak to reporters.Tite said the team’s focus was currently on preparing for Wednesday’s friendly with Qatar. He added that Neymar was still part of his plans.Technically Neymar is indispensable, but not irreplaceable, the coach said. Also Read | Police probe as Neymar uses social media against rape claimAlso Read | Brazil football star Neymar denies rape accusations in ParisAlso Seelast_img read more

There were too many gentlemen in my team: Sourav Ganguly on his players not sledging

first_imgSourav Ganguly was known as a fearless leader who shaped and transformed the Indian team into what it is during his time as captain between 2000 and 2005.Dada, as he was fondly called by his teammates, was a leader in every sense as he led by example on the field with the bat, his captaincy and even with the verbal wars that he engaged in with his opponents from time to time.Ganguly was not one to shy away from giving it back to the opposition and also backed his players to not back down against sledging. But Sourav Ganguly revealed on Tuesday that not all of his players were willing to engage in verbal wars as there were too many gentlemen in his team and it was only Harbhajan Singh who followed his instructions without batting an eyelid.”It was very hard with that team, because we had too many gentlemen. If you ask Rahul Dravid to do that, he’ll come back and say ‘No no no that’s not the right way to play.'”You ask V.V.S. Laxman to do that, he’ll say ‘I’m concentrating on my batting.’ And if you tell Sachin to do it, he will stand at mid-on and tell the mid-wicket fielder to sledge Steve Waugh, and himself not do it,” Ganguly said on air during the rain interruption in the World Cup 2019 semi-final between India and New Zealand in Manchester.”There were a lot of issues in that team. The only ones holding the Indian flag were Harbhajan Singh and Sourav Ganguly. Sardarji did everything I told him to do,” said Ganguly, who turned 47 on July 8.advertisementThe first semi-final between India and New Zealand has to be stopped after 46.1 overs in the first innings due to heavy rain in Manchester.New Zealand were 211 for 5 in 46.1 overs when rain forced the players off the field and match officials waited for more than four hours before deciding to take the game to its reserve day.The game will resume from where it was stopped on Tuesday with Ross Taylor and Tom Latham unbeaten on 67 and 3 respectively. Also Read | India vs New Zealand semi-final 1st ever World Cup knock-out match to move into reserve dayAlso Read | India vs New Zealand World Cup semi-final Reserve Day: What it means for IndiaAlso See:last_img read more

Intensified Mathematics Programme to be Implemented in September

first_img 40 per cent of the teachers at the secondary level are unqualified mathematics teachers Story Highlights Behind targets for Mathematics established in the National Education Strategic Plan An intensified Mathematics programme will be implemented to address the continued poor performance in the subject Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, has announced that come the start of the new academic year in September, an intensified Mathematics programme will be implemented to address the continued poor performance in the subject.“The central objective of the programme is to ensure that persons engaging our children in the teaching and learning of the content are most effective,” the Minister said.Rev. Thwaites was delivering the keynote address at the Ministry of Education, Region 4 Stakeholders’ Back-to-School Conference 2013, at the Grand Palladium Hotel and Resort in Lucea, Hanover, on August 15.The Minister indicated that in the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) examination results which were released earlier this week, there was an increase in passes in some 25 of 35 subject areas.“There has been nearly a 5 per cent increase in Mathematics passes over last year’s outcome, which indicates that 42.2 per cent of candidates who took the exam passed.  This means that 1,100 more students passed than last year.  The Ministry is however, not satisfied with the outcomes relating to these passes in Mathematics as well as similar results in English, as they are both important for economic growth and development,” the Minister said.He said Jamaica has much ground to cover, if the country is to attain the targets for Mathematics established in the National Education Strategic Plan, which outlines 85 per cent mastery at Grade 4; 80 per cent of students attaining 65 per cent or more in Mathematics on the Grade 6 Achievement Test and 100 per cent of the Grade 11 cohort sitting CSEC Mathematics by 2016.“We are behind in these targets and our students continue to register poor performance in Mathematics due to several factors.  A significant cause is that many teachers at the primary and secondary levels of the education system are not fully equipped to effectively support the teaching and learning of the subject,” Rev. Thwaites said.“The results of the 2011 Ministry of Education census showed that only 9 per cent of teachers of mathematics at the secondary level are qualified to teach the subject to Grade 11, while some 40 per cent of the teachers at the secondary level are unqualified mathematics teachers, as they are trained in other areas of specialization; and 39 per cent of teachers at the primary level have no secondary mathematics certification,” the Minister noted.Rev. Thwaites  said the National Mathematics Policy Guidelines, scheduled to be implemented in September, is central to the Ministry’s response to the critical status of Mathematics in Jamaica.More than 300 Principals and Board Chairmen attended the Back-to- School Conference, which was held under the theme: ‘Leadership with a mission: Developing a culture of performance’.last_img read more
