Information about imprisoned journalist’s stroke unavailable in press or Facebook

first_img News November 19, 2009 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Information about imprisoned journalist’s stroke unavailable in press or Facebook Help by sharing this information April 27, 2021 Find out more The Vietnamese government is behaving in a criminal manner towards certain prisoners of conscience, keeping them in detention although they are in very poor health. Father Nguyen Van Ly, the editor of an opposition newspaper, has had as stroke in prison, while writer Tran Khai Thanh Thuy’s health has been undermined by harsh prison conditions.“Such ruthless treatment of political prisoners, including journalists and writers, is unworthy of a government that has just presided the United Nations Security Council,” Reporters Without Borders said. “This appalling reality is very far from the ‘New Vietnam’ that French Prime Minister François Fillon praised during a recent visit.”The press freedom organisation added: “In view of the urgency of these humanitarian cases, we expect a public reaction from the European Union, which is engaged in a human rights dialogue with Vietnam that has yet to produce any results.”The Vietnamese themselves will not find any mention of these cases in the press, especially as the government has just issued a new directive of which article 7 makes the dissemination of news and information “not in accordance with the interests of the nation and people” punishable by heavy fines or the withdrawal of the journalist’s press card.Neither will Vietnamese Internet users be find information about these cases on the social-networking website Facebook, which is almost entirely inaccessible. Reporters Without Borders calls on the authorities to explain why Internet users are having so many problems accessing the site. Vietnam is making a mistake if it is following China’s example in targeting Facebook.Internet users in Vietnam told Reporters Without Borders they have been having increasing difficulties in accessing Facebook for the past week. The website has more than a million users in Vietnam and most of them use the Vietnamese-language version that was developed by Facebook itself, which is based in the United States. The Associated Press has quoted a technician at Vietnam Data Corp, an Internet service provider, as saying the authorities gave orders for Facebook to be blocked.Prisoners of conscienceFather Nguyen Van Ly, a Catholic priest, suffered a stroke on 14 November in his cell in wing 11 of Ba Sao prison, where he has been held since 2007. His family say the right side of his body is now paralysed. He has been taken to a hospital in the capital where he is slowly recovering the use of his right arm. The security minister said in early September that Nguyen Van Ly’s health was “assured” in the prison. He nonetheless had a serious of problems prior to the stroke – including haemorrhaging, a fall and incipient paralysis – that were almost certainly due to his hypertension. The editor of the dissident newspaper Tu do Ngôn luan, Nguyen Van Ly is serving an eight-year jail sentence on a charge of “propaganda hostile to the government.”Writer and human rights activist Tran Khai Thanh Thuy’s health suffered a marked deterioration after he was transferred to Hoa Lu prison, near Hanoi, on 19 October. She was beaten at the time of her arrest on a trumped up charge of aggravated assault. Tran Khai Thanh Thuy, who suffers from diabetes and tuberculosis that is in an advanced stage, was denied medical treatment during a previous spell in prison.Other dissidents are having problems in jail. Secondary school teacher Vu Van Hung went on hunger strike in protest against his three-year sentence for defending multi-party democracy. Lawyer and blogger Le Thi Cong Nhan is suffering from allergies exacerbated by the conditions in her prison. In the 50-square-metre cell she has to share with 60 other inmates, the space in which she has to sleep on a mat is just 60 cm wide.At least 21 journalists and bloggers are in prison in Vietnam. Psychiatrist sues Keck for wrongful constructive termination

first_imgAlan Hanft, a former child psychiatrist at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, took a medical leave of absence last year due to an autoimmune disease. He was asked not to return to the office. (Sunny Dong | Daily Trojan)A former child psychiatrist has filed a lawsuit against the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and a hospital director for wrongful constructive termination, disability discrimination and other complaints last month.Dr. Alan Hanft requested a medical leave of absence in October 2017 at CHLA due to an autoimmune disease. Hanft was hired through the Keck school to work at the hospital. However, Hanft took time off from work in December to March 2018 to take care of his own health. He returned to work in April, only to find an administrator and two security guards waiting for him in his office, according to the suit. The suit also stated that Hanft was escorted out of the office in front of his colleagues, and was told that he couldn’t return.“I was humiliated,” Hanft said. “Never in my life was I escorted anywhere by security guards.”After this incident, Hanft and his legal team drafted a civil complaint — suing Keck and CHLA for discrimination based on disability, harassment, retaliation, defamation, intrusion into private affairs and wrongful constructive termination in violation of public policy, among other charges.Hanft said that his removal from the office was not an isolated incident.USC Keck declined to comment, citing employee privacy. “Due to employee privacy issues, USC is unable to share details regarding personnel matters,” a university spokesperson said in an email.  According to the complaint, Susan Turkel, an associate professor of psychiatry and the behavioral sciences and director of psychiatric child services at CHLA, had violated his right to privacy by pressing him to reveal personal information about his diagnosis before he requested a leave of absence in October. Turkel is listed in the Keck School of Medicine’s faculty index, and is being represented by USC.Turkel did not respond to Daily Trojan in time for publication.“Dr. Turkel persistently and repeatedly pried into my medical history and resented me when I wouldn’t share it with her,” Hanft said. “She was pressuring me for it. I told her that I was concerned that she would tell everyone else on the team, and she told me I have to accept that.”CHLA declined to comment on Hanft’s allegations. As a doctor, this intrusion into private matters seemed off-putting to Hanft, who referenced the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and other obligations of privilege and privacy that doctors swear to uphold.“[Turkel] acted like she owned [my medical history] and it was hers to do what she wanted with,” Hanft said.In November 2017, Turkel complained to Steven Siegel, the chair of the department of psychiatry about Hanft’s problematic and condescending behaviors and attitude, according to a memo obtained by the Daily Trojan.Turkel’s memo described Hanft as being difficult to work with, establishing poor rapport with patients and being unresponsive to colleagues. Turkel called Hanft’s “fitness for his current position” into question and requested that his contract not be renewed. Hanft said that the memo was a malicious pretext set up to fire him. The Daily Trojan obtained five years of professional evaluations dating back to 2012, in which CHLA division chiefs called Hanft “outstanding,” “someone who met challenges with good-grace” and someone worthy of promotions. For each year from 2012-16, the question on the evaluations: “Are there behavioral issues?” was answered with a “no.” Three of these evaluations were signed by Turkel. John Winer, an attorney from Hanft’s legal team, said these documents showed a lack of support for Turkel’s claims. “There is zero indication of the pretext on which they [asked him to leave],” Winer said. “We were able to review a lot of the documents from the investigation file and … what we learned is that there is zero support for Dr. Turkel’s position in the case.”Hanft further detailed the pain he endured during his final months working at CHLA under Turkel, characterizing it as a hostile work environment. The civil complaint said Hanft was yelled at for attempting to discuss his leave of absence. “[Turkel] was still glaring at [Hanft] and told him that she did not want to discuss the subject [of his leave] anymore and told [Hanft] to stop talking about it,” according to the civil complaint. “[When] Turkel left, [Hanft] closed the door to his office and began crying.” A month before he was removed from his office in April, Hanft began seeking legal advice and brought his case to the law firm Winer, McKenna, Burritt and Tills, LLP.“The bad things that were happening seemed to be escalating,” Hanft said. “Bad things [were becoming] so bad they became intolerable. That’s when the legal [route] became more active. [Turkel] knew about my health issues, and when I requested time off it became much more of a problem.”Winer stated that constructive termination — which Wex Legal Dictionary defines as “when an employee quits a job because working conditions are so intolerable” — was one of the main claims of the suit.  “He couldn’t handle it anymore,” Winer said. “Instead of being welcomed back [to work], he was escorted out like a criminal in front of all of his coworkers.”Hanft said that he believed the security guards were not necessary and that a phone call would have sufficed.“They knew that [day] was my return date,” Hanft said. “I don’t understand why they didn’t call me the day before. Instead, I showed up.”Before his official resignation at the end of May this year, Hanft said that he had repeatedly asked higher ranking members of the administration within Keck and the University to seek help. USC’s Office of Equity and Diversity reached out to Hanft via email in January, and Hanft arranged for a meeting in February, per emails obtained by the Daily Trojan.  The office is still conducting its investigation, and no conclusions have been reached, according to Hanft’s legal team. OED deferred comment to the University.“I had reached out to [administration] high up within Keck and the University and it seemed like my concerns fell on deaf ears,” Hanft said.last_img read more

Round-up: Chelsea almost there, Mackie contract offer, Holloway wants signings

first_imgEmbed from Getty ImagesChelsea are one more win from the title after beating Middlesbrough 3-0 in a one-sided game at Stamford Bridge. Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic scored for the Blues, who moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and will be crowned champions if they win at West Brom on Friday.Boro never threatened an upset and their defeat confirmed their relegation back to the Championship. Conte savours ‘big win’Embed from Getty ImagesAntonio Conte again insisted the title race iss not over, but he acknowledged: “For sure now I am a bit relaxed. This was a big step – a big win.”The Blues boss added: “At this stage of the season, to win is great and now we need to go another step, We have the possibility to do it on Friday against West Brom but it won’t be easy.“West Brom are a really good, physical team. But for sure today we took a big step – we must be honest.” Chelsea link ‘flattering’ – TierneyEmbed from Getty ImagesKieran Tierney says he is happy at Celtic despite reports linking him with Chelsea. It has been claimed that Chelsea are keen on the 19-year-old full-back, who has made three appearances for Scotland.Tierney told Sky Sports: “It’s just a story and I’m just concentrating on Celtic and my next training day.” Mackie offered deal – on reduced termsEmbed from Getty ImagesQPR have offered Jamie Mackie a new contract.Mackie, whose current deal expires this summer, is in his second spell at Loftus Road.Rangers’ financial position means the 31-year-old has been offered reduced wages, and the club are therefore waiting to discover whether he intends to re-sign.Mackie will be available on a Bosman free transfer if he turns down the offer or at least decides to keep his options open.Meanwhile, Karl Henry, whose contract is also due to expire, will be leaving after four years at Rangers.Henry, 34, has not played since December, when he was told he had no future at the club following a fall-out with manager Ian Holloway. Holloway wants more new signingsEmbed from Getty ImagesIan Holloway says it will take QPR two more transfer windows to significantly turn their fortunes around.Manager Holloway made wholesale changes in January and wants to further revamp his squad after losing 18 of his 30 matches since replacing the sacked Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.Financial Fair Play rules and ongoing legal wrangling over the scale of QPR’s fine for the club’s previous lavish spending mean there will be less money to spend.“It’s going to take another couple of windows. We’re not moving forward money-wise, we’ll be moving backwards,” Holloway said.“Other clubs might be adding to their budgets, but we’ve thrown a load of money away and we’re not going to do that anymore.“Hopefully, with the new scouting network I’m putting together, I’ll be able to coach and I’ll be able to get people I can have.” Bees trigger Jota clauseBrentford have taken up an option in Jota’s contract to keep him at Griffin Park until the end of next season. The 25-year-old scored 12 goals in 23 games for the Bees after returning from a loan spell with Spanish club Eibar in January. Fulham ‘ready for everythingEmbed from Getty ImagesFulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is confident his side can overcome Reading and reach the Championship play-off final. The Whites will face Reading over two legs for a place at Wembley, with the first leg at Craven Cottage on Saturday.Jokanovic declared: “We must be ready for everything. This team (Reading) finished third and that shows their level.“The table says they are favourites and we are going to try to surprise them. We must be ready.“It’s going to be a tough two games for us and for them too. Ohio township bill could impact ag zoning

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Evin Bachelor, Law Fellow, Agricultural and Resource Law Program, Ohio State UniversityIn December, the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate agreed to modifications to House Bill 500, which would make a number of changes to Ohio’s township laws. Some of the highlights of the most recent version include:A board of township trustees must select a chairperson annually.Petitions to change the name of township roads will result in an automatic name change if the county commissioners do not adopt a resolution regarding the petition within 60 days.County commissioners will not be able to vacate township roads unless the applicable board of township trustees have adopted a resolution approving the vacation.A board of township trustees will have the authority to charge a fee against a person who appeals a zoning decision to the board of zoning appeals in order to defray costs associated with advertising, mailing, and the like.A board of township trustees may suspend a member of a township zoning commission or township board of zoning appeals after charges are filed against a member, but must provide a hearing for removal no later than 60 days after the charges are filed. In limited home rule townships, the current requirement that a township must submit a proposed zoning amendment or resolution to a planning commission will be optional. This list comes from the Ohio Legislative Service Commission’s bill analysis as of the bill’s re-reporting by the Senate Finance Committee. The bill analysis has a full list of the changes that House Bill 500 would make.Importantly for agriculture, the Ohio Senate removed language from the bill that would have changed Ohio Revised Code § 519.21(B), which limits the authority of townships to restrict agricultural uses via zoning. Currently, townships may only regulate agricultural uses in platted subdivisions created under certain statutory procedures, and only if certain conditions are met. The House had passed a version that would have allowed townships to regulate agricultural uses in any platted subdivision, but the language would not have changed the certain conditions that would have to be met.last_img read more

Weekend Project: Make Your Own NFC Tags

first_imgRelated Posts sarah perez Tags:#How To#mobile#web As noted above, we’re focusing on making tags using your Android phone. There are actually several apps that allow for this now in the Android Market. One such app, to give you an idea, is the NFC Task Launcher from developer Joshua Krohn. We were introduced to this app via an NFC World interview. In detailing the potential uses for NFC tags, Krohn told the website:You could have a tag that enables Wi-Fi, configures your wireless network and then connects — so visitors would never have to enter your security key to use your wireless connection. They would not need to have an open network, they would only need to scan the tag and the rest is done for them.He personally uses NFC tags in his car, his home and his workplace, where he uses them to put the phone into different modes. For example, in the car, a tag enables Bluetooth, disables Wi-Fi, sets the media volume to max and launches the Car Home application. And all with just a tap!Meanwhile, at the office, another tag enables Wi-Fi, disables Bluetooth and connects to his work’s secure network.Currently, his NFC Action Launcher application supports these tasks:Enable / Disable / Toggle WifiEnable / Disable / Toggle BluetoothLaunch any installed ApplicationConnect to any known SSIDConfigure a new Wifi Connection and connectConfigure and enable Portable HotspotEnable / Disable Auto-syncLaunch any Tasker Task (for users of Tasker)Changing Phone RingtoneChange Notification ToneChanging Ringer Mode (Normal/Silent/Vibrate)Changing Ringer VolumeChanging Media VolumeChanging Alarm VolumeChanging Notification VolumeYou can also use it to create task tags, profile tasks, vCard tasks, Smart URL tags, text tags and URI tags (Tel, SMS, Mailto). Originally launched on the XDA Developer forums, the app is now availalbe in the Android Market here for $1.99.Similar apps in the Market include Touchtag’s client (free), NXP’s TagWriter (free), taglet (free), Write a Tag (free), AnyTag (free), NFC Classic Tag Reader Writer (free) and others, mostly in Japanese. For experimental purposes though, it’s nice when the developer is hanging around in the forums, responding to user questions, like Krohn does here. That may be worth the $2 to you when choosing what app to try.To see what tag reading and writing looks like in action, check out this YouTube video. Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagementcenter_img NFC, or near field communication, is an emerging technology that will power mobile payment systems and mobile wallet solutions, like those in development by Apple, Google, RIM, mobile operators, banks and others. But NFC itself is just a way to send data wirelessly between devices, meaning it can be used for far more than mobile payments alone. One way to take advantage of a phone’s NFC capabilities is to make your own NFC tags. These tags, when read by your phone, can perform a number of actions, like open a map, launch a website, change your phone’s settings and configurations, plus dozens of other tasks. Wouldn’t it be fun to make tags like that? Well, now you can. Here’s how.One of the most popular phones to have NFC built in is Google’s flagship device, the Samsung Nexus S. However, it’s not the only one. There are many phones you can buy today that have NFC built in, and there are several more than are coming soon, like the Nokia Astound (C7) or Samsung’s Galaxy S II, which will include NFC in some models. You can check out a more complete list of NFC phones here for details. But for our purposes, this project will focus on using Android phones, specifically the Nexus S.Where To Get NFC Tags Of course, before you can make your own NFC tags, you first have to acquire them. These aren’t available on the shelves at Best Buy, so you’ll have to order them online. Thanks to software developer Joshua Krohn, who made the NFC Task Launcher app described below, we have a good list of sites selling NFC tags. These include the following:Tagage: This Finland-based store ships NFC stickers worldwide to many countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States. U.S. shipments take about 5-7 days. Sparkfun: For U.S. customers, Sparkfun sells laminated U.S. tags.Touchtag: Also U.S.-only, Touchtag sells various starter kits of 25 or 500 tags.CoreRFID: In Europe, this U.K.-based RFID shop sells different types of tags, like these sticker discs and more. At the moment, there is no viable alternative to it. Though BJP may gain from the anti-incumbency factor, it can’t form a government on its own. Narendra Modi may be the party’s best prime ministerial candidate but he does not enjoy nationwide support. Allies of Congress and BJP will consolidate their gains from the chaotic scenario. For now, uncertainty looms large in the country.V.K. Tangri, Dehradun. UPA is indeed trailing behind NDA by a significant margin but the point to note is that “others” are doing better than either of them. This amorphous mass may score higher on all parameters, but it offers no credible third choice. None of the leaders of these parties figures as an acceptable prime minister, even assuming the parties could agree on accepting any one of them as such. It’s a classic picture of political chaos.Bishan Sahai, Patna. The utter failure of UPA 2 can be ascribed to: 1. Manmohan Singh, who, as Prime Minister, could not understand, perform or exercise his powers, responsibilities and duties towards the people. 2. In the mood for Megu: The Leela Palace Hotel, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi

first_imgMegu puts you in a happy space the moment you step in. The zen vibe is punctuated by thoughtful unobtrusive service and truly blessed food. Much of the detailing is lost by night, but now, with the restaurant opening its doors for lunch, your dining experience gets a facelift. There are a couple of reasons why the restaurant is worth visiting by day: the lunch menu has been crafted keeping both the busy business executive and the lazy lunch goer in mind. There are a number of new vegetarian options on the lunch menu which are frankly quite delicious; also, kids who enjoy sushi but are kept out of Megu by night can enjoy platter after platter over an extended family lunch; and you can enjoy a vivid green view by day which eludes you after dark. Enough reasons to tuck into the goodness of the new lunch menu we would say.In there for a quickie? The menu sports an efficient three-course lunch where you can pick from a selection of appetisers, entrees and desserts. While there are ample vegetarian appetiser options to choose from, the veg entrees are restricted but the chef is happy to accommodate anything special you might like created for your meal.Going a la carte? You must try the shira ae even if you are a die-hard non-vegetarian. The textural concoction redefines flavours that are clean and new. The sesame crunch breaks through the dip-like consistency and is a surprisingly good addition. The wasabi fried prawns with mango sauce is not an inventive dish but relies on recreating familiar tastes in a modern context. If sushi is your calling then Megu’s platters are a no brainer. There are many ways of doing sushi; while some places get the roll filling right others rely on the rice roll to create an impact. At Megu, the chef has got both right and the sushi is fresh, crunchy and wholesome. While many diners are intrigued by the fresh wasabi being grated in front of them, if you like a strong wasabi hit stay with the old version as it is a couple of degrees more pungent. A sorbet is served between courses and is the perfect palate cleanser. For mains, choose the crispy tofu with oroshi steak sauce (vegetarian) as it delivers on its promise of plenty; there are at least half a dozen vegetarian sushi options as well. The signature silver cod with yuzu miso is recommended for sea food fans as the gorgeous fish is lightly flavoured and is smooth on the tongue. The pork chops, cooked to perfection and cut into half-inch slivers retain much of the flavours they are cooked in and if the fish-prawn combine is getting too much, order this. None of the mains are overpowering in flavour and that perhaps is the beauty of the food plated up at Megu. The manager, Rajat Kalia, is a powerhouse of information and helps you pick dishes that work best for your palate if it is unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine.
