Garry Monk keen to open discussions with Michu over Swansea future

first_img Michu 1 Swansea City manager Garry Monk is keen to open discussions with Spanish striker Michu over his long-term future in South Wales. The 29-year-old has endured a frustrating season on loan at Napoli, where injury has plagued his campaign and reduced him to just five appearances for Rafael Benitez’s Serie A outfit.Michu scored a sensational 22 goals in his debut season for Swansea but injuries in the last two have curtailed his progress, and Monk says negotiations will begin soon over his future at the Liberty Stadium.“I’m sure we will make contact with Michu before the end of the season. But we’ll let his season finish and our finish before we sit down at some point to discuss the future,” said Monk.“I’ve got a good relationship with him, we were team-mates before I became manager, and I was fine with how he wanted to go [to Napoli]. I’ve kept an eye on him and it’s our duty as a club to understand what’s exactly going on with him on a game to game basis.”Michu’s stunning debut Premier League season was rewarded with an international call up, but ankle surgery in November last year was the latest in a long list of problems, and Monk sympathises with the striker. The Swans boss said: “He hasn’t had a sustained period where he’s been fit and it’s always hard as a player when that happens.“He’s been unfortunate, but if he get can a sustained period of fitness I’m sure you’ll see the quality we’ve seen here.”last_img read more
