It has been more than 2 1/2 years since Colin Kaepernick suited up for an NFL game, yet it appears there are people still trying play defense against him.On Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee distributed a fundraising email. On Thursday, Yahoo reported that an image of Kaepernick in the email appeared side-by-side with President Trump, and that the Kaepernick image seemed to have been altered to make Kaepernick’s skin tone appear darker. The email asked respondents who …
17 February 2005The government, the SA National Blood Service (SANBS) and an expert committee have agreed on a new risk-rating model for blood donations, following the blood service’s admission in December that was using race and sexual orientation to profile blood donors.Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang gave the SANBS until the end of January to revise their risk model to identify the profile of a safe donor without taking race into account. The SANBS said profiling “was just one of the many factors” used to assess risk to recipients, and that donors were placed in categories to determine their risk profile.Health Department spokesperson Sibani Mngadi said the most significant threat to the safety of blood was posed by the window period during which currently available laboratory tests could not detect the presence of viruses such as HIV and hepatitis. The new risk model aims to minimise the risk currently posed by the window period, using the donor’s status as a primary risk indicator. This meas that first-time donors will donate blood for the screening of transmissible diseases.“After a donor has donated more than three times, it is accepted that the risk due to the window period has been significantly reduced, and his or her red cells can be used for treatment”, Mngadi explained. This group of donors is regarded as “low risk”, while those who have donated more than seven units of blood in the previous 24 months are regarded as “very low risk” donors whose blood can be used for all types of treatment.Mngadi said that although those who met the necessary health criteria were accepted as donors, all donated blood would be screened for transmissible diseases before being processed for transfusion services.“Blood from the three risk groups will continue to be stringently tested every time the individual donates, and donors are encouraged to avoid risky behaviour”, he said.Nucleic Acid Technology (NAT) screening technology will also be introduced to reduce the current window period in the transfusion service.Mngadi said the implementation of the new risk model and NAT would begin immediately, but that, due to infrastructural and technological obstacles, the new risk model would effectively be in place within the next six months.A campaign to explain the new model to hospitals, clinics, doctors and the country’s current blood donor base is being planned.Source: BuaNews Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo material
US President Barack Obama watches news coverage of the passing of Nelson Mandela in the Outer Oval Office on Thursday 5 December 2013. The stadium is where Mandela made his last major public appearance, at the final of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.The service will be a final chance for grieving South Africans to unite in a mass celebration of Mandela’s life ahead of the smaller, more formal state funeral at his home village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape on 15 December. While Tuesday’s memorial service will likely be one of the largest gatherings of global leaders in recent history, only a handful of dignitaries will attend Sunday’s state burial in Mandela’s ancestral home of Qunu in the Eastern Cape. “We’re trying to keep that to the family,” foreign ministry spokesperson Clayson Monyela told Talk Radio 702.“The world literally is coming to South Africa, and the large number of high profile guests arriving is unprecedented,” Monyela said.Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said international heads of state and royalty had started arriving in South Africa. Representatives from almost every global organisation will attend.“I don’t think it has ever happened before. All organisations of the world.” Chabane said. “We also have princes and princesses, kings and queens coming.”US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle will be accompanied by three of his country’s former presidents: Jimmy Carter, George W Bush and Bill Clinton and their wives, as well as 26 congressmen.Thirteen presidents from Africa and 15 from the rest of the world have confirmed attendance. Presidents David Cameron of the UK, François Hollande of France, Joachim Gauck of Germany, Enrique Pena of Mexico and Mahmud Abbas of Palestine will be at the memorial service, as will UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, who will lead a delegation made up of four of her country’s former presidents. Britain’s Prince Charles will represent his mother, Queen Elizabeth, at the funeral in Qunu.African leaders who have confirmed are President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, President Jakaya Kikwere of Tanzania, President Joseph Kabila of the DRC, President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia, and President Macky Saul of Senegal.Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and singer-activist Bono, as well as British billionaire Richard Branson and musician Peter Gabriel are expected to be among the celebrity mourners at FNB Stadium.‘A special place in the hearts of people’“The fact that international leaders are making their way to South Africa at such short notice reflects the special place president Nelson Mandela holds in the hearts of people around the globe,” Chabane said.“We are touched by the fact that many countries have declared periods of mourning, ordered that flags be flown at half-mast and draped or lit landmarks in the colours of the South African flag. We truly appreciate these gestures.”South Africans have held permanent day and night vigils outside Mandela’s Johannesburg home since his death on the night of 5 December. Sunday marked the formal start of a week of official mourning for the country’s greatest statesman. Before the funeral, Mandela’s body will lie in state for three days from Wednesday 11 December in the amphitheatre of the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where was sworn in as president in 1994.Every morning for three days, his coffin will be carried through the streets of the capital in a funeral cortege, to give as many people as possible the chance to pay their final respects. The official memorial service at FNB Stadium will start at 11am with gates opening to the public at 06h00.“Entry to the stadium will be in a first come, first served basis,” Chabane said. No private vehicles will be given access to the stadium, with people urged to make use of public transport, such as the Gautrain, Metrorail and Rea Vaya. Mourners can also attend satellite services at Ellis Park, Orlando and Dobsonville stadiums, where the events at FNB Stadium will be broadcast on giant screens.
Five years ago this week I began writing for AOL’s blog network Weblogs Inc. I wrote 5 technology news stories each day and was paid a mere $5 per article. It was grueling, that was just one of 3 jobs I had at the time – and it was great.AOL’s secret internal plan to ramp up its online content business was leaked today to New York business blog Business Insider and people are saying it’s got “content farm” written all over it. In-house writers are expected to write 5 to 10 blog posts per day and those stories are expected to go from an average of 1500 pageviews per post today to an amazing 7000 views per post in the future. How will stories be selected? The only thing that will matter, apparently, is search engine friendliness and monetization potential. That might sound terrible to outsiders, but having been there I want to say: Good luck AOL, I hope that strategy works wonderfully for you. I genuinely do.The 58 page document titled The AOL Way: Content, Product, Media Engineering, and Revenue Management is worth a read to anyone in the media business, but the hardest pill to swallow is the relationship between quantity, quality and money.David Carr at the New York Times tweets: “Must Read, Must Not Emulate: Fascinating Look Inside the Word Gulag at AOL.” Tech journalist Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols says, “AOL expects its staff writers to write 5 to 10 stories per day! Yeah. Right. That’s going to happen.” Social media analyst Jessica Well says, “Yeah… quantity over quality… that’s the spirit, AOL! :/”I’m sure the writers filling those quotas are paid more than the $5 per post that I got paid 5 years ago. When I took the position the pay had just gone up from $4 per post!At that time I was also writing 6 posts per day about international currency speculation, as a subcontractor for a CMS company. And doing 3 to 5 interviews per week with a nonprofit technology organization. I was producing roughly 10 to 12 posts per day. Having landed those three gigs, I quit my minimum wage job at a convenience store in my home town. (Thanks, AOL content farm!)Were those posts any good? They were good enough that when tech blog top story aggregator Techmeme launched, I had 8 headlines there in 8 weeks. Then one day Michael Arrington called and hired me at TechCrunch. “You keep beating us to stories,” he told me. I was able to do that because I was getting RSS feeds from key vendors in our market delivered by IM and SMS. That’s standard practice among tech bloggers now, but at the time no one else was doing it, so I was able to cover lots of news first. The fact that I was able to do it under the AOL banner, for any pay at all, was a great platform for me.Right: Barb Dybwad, then at AOL, took this picture of me showing her a blog I was working on for a local natural foods store when we met at the first tech industry event I attended, an unconference called Tag Camp. A few months later, Barb hired me to write for AOL. Today she’s at a site called Tecca. Thanks, Barb! Now I’m the co-editor of ReadWriteWeb and I’m happy to report that things are very different for me. Here at ReadWriteWeb we pay our writers far better, but we do ask full timers to write 5 posts each day. We ask them to write smart, informed, quality posts. Preferably before anyone else does. It’s very hard, but very enjoyable work. You know what, though? We’ve got a full time news spot open right now and I’m having a hard time filling it. I think of AOL, big as it is, as a farm team in the minor leagues. I made a splash in the minors and then got called up to the major leagues. Where are the minor leagues now, though? Where are the tech bloggers who have toiled for too little pay, pumped out large quantities of content and proven themselves to have potential to work on a different level?I don’t know where those sites are anymore. If they appear again, though, I’m guessing they’ll look like content farms. The executives behind such outfits, publishing on mass scale, are inevitably going to treat writers and readers like worthless pawns in a chess game worth billions of dollars. It would be a mistake to expect them to do anything else. But some of those people will demonstrate that they aren’t just pawns, that they are writers, journalists and power-bloggers.Big league bloggers and writers these days need to be able to write well, in large quantity and quickly. It’s not easy, but who said writing for a living, in an era when anyone can publish with ease, was going to be easy?So AOL, go build a giant content farm for mainstream readers. I’m sure some of the content will be worth reading, and though management’s priorities are SEO and monetization, I’m sure many of the writers will sneak in some gems. While you’ve got them, give them a trial by fire, too. Then send them our way. Or don’t – if they are capable of stepping up to the plate and hitting homeruns – hopefully we’ll find them before our competitors do. Mr. Hutchinson also commended stakeholders supporting the Irish potato programme for their efforts in assisting farmers to increase productivity thereby repositioning Jamaica to attain self-sufficiency in the crop. He was speaking at a national Irish potato stakeholders’ seminar at the National Irrigation Commission research station in Hounslow, St. Elizabeth on August 24. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) has committed $50 million to provide crop care and productivity support for this year’s implementation of the National Irish Potato Programme, which will cost $1.6 billion. Story Highlights The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) has committed $50 million to provide crop care and productivity support for this year’s implementation of the National Irish Potato Programme, which will cost $1.6 billion. This was disclosed by Minister without Portfolio in MICAF, Hon. J.C. Hutchinson, who said the inputs will include pesticides and fertilizers, among other key provisions, adding that “we are going to be increasing productivity by 11 per cent (equating to0 17 tonnes per hectare.”He was speaking at a national Irish potato stakeholders’ seminar at the National Irrigation Commission research station in Hounslow, St. Elizabeth on August 24.Mr. Hutchinson said the programme’s outturn for the 2016/17 crop year, which ended in June, saw the sector recording a 99 per cent self-sufficiency rate in local table potato production. This, he contended, has set the tone for the 2017/18 crop year, which will focus on further boosting productivity. In this regard, the Minister advised that nine validation plots will be established on which participatory training for farmers will be conducted. Additionally, he said 20 farm tours will be conducted for farmers not benefitting from the training exercise. The activities, he further stated, will also include the strengthening of marketing agreements or contracts between farmers and buyers.Mr. Hutchinson said based on its outcomes, the programme has become a model for other crops.“The National Irish Potato Programme has earned its reputation as a success story for Jamaican agriculture and in addition to that, it has become a model for our import substitution strategy, which we are also now applying to other crops such as onion,” he pointed out.Meanwhile, Mr. Hutchinson announced that the Ministry’s Plant Quarantine Division has finalized negotiations with authorities in the Cayman Islands to facilitate the exportation of local Irish potatoes to that country under a pre-clearance arrangement. In this regard, he urged farmers to adapt to the changing requirements of the sector while making every effort to practice climate-smart agriculture.Mr. Hutchinson also commended stakeholders supporting the Irish potato programme for their efforts in assisting farmers to increase productivity thereby repositioning Jamaica to attain self-sufficiency in the crop.Among the stakeholders are: the Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL); Newport-Fersan; H & L Agro; the Potato and Onion Producers Association (POPA); and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday afternoon accused the BJP of misguiding the tribal and scheduled caste communities in the state and trying to buy their votes by distributing cash amongst them before the elections.”They come and pay Rs 1,000 to the voters just to win elections. But nobody saw them in Jangalmahal when the area was reeling under trouble because of the Maoists,” she said while addressing a public meeting in Jhargram on the occasion of “Adivasi Dibas” (World Tribal Day) and 76th year of the Quit India movement. The proposed university is coming up on 27.04-acre land on Jhargram-Lodhasuli Road. She said two more schools with Olchiki as the medium of instruction will soon come up in Jhargram. Four more similar schools will come up — two each in Bankura and Purulia. Two hundred Olchiki teachers will be appointed to coach the students. They divide people on the basis of caste and religion. In Purulia, they let loose the Mahatos against the tribals and the vice versa in Jhargram.”She further added: “In the last seven years, we have not let anybody disrupt peace in this region. People could not go out of their homes earlier apprehending attack by the Maoists. We have not allowed the Maoists to enter this place. A few people are bringing in Maoists from neighbouring Jharkhand to create a bloodbath in Jhargram. They (BJP) want the poor to face problems. They do not want them to get rice at Rs 2 a kg, free education, job and healthcare… If you (people) have faith in me, I will ask you not to trust anybody else other than us (TMC). Till I am alive, I will never let anybody to act against the interests of the people. You are my family. I love the Adivasis (tribals).”She also maintained that only the government run by Ma, Mati, Manus can give peace and development in Jangalmahal.Hitting out at the saffron party, she said: “I do not create any division among people. I do not create division among the Hindus and Muslims, nor among the other communities. It’s the ruling BJP at the Centre which does that. We are not with them (the BJP).”She also asked the MLAs and MPs to go to the people and sit with the administration to sort out problems. Banerjee urged the students who are involved with Police Community Development programmes to go to different areas to ensure that the people get the benefits of various schemes taken up by the state government. She also maintained: “Massive development has happened here in the past seven years. The students are getting scholarships, super-specialty hospitals have come up, people are getting rice at Rs 2 a kilogram. I head the Tribal Welfare department and more development work will be carried out in the future.”Banerjee felicitated the students who did well in the public examinations. She also inaugurated several bus routes connecting both the local areas and Jhargram with the neighbouring districts. Around 55,000 bicycles under Sabuj Sathi project will also be distributed among the students.
Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is carrying out special drives against dengue in view of the ongoing rainfall in Kolkata.Drives are being conducted to clear up accumulated garbage as it might serve as breeding ground for mosquitoes. Senior civic officials said the waterlogging that had taken place in different parts of the city due to heavy downpour in the past few days, did not serve as potential breeding grounds as the accumulated water was cleared within a few hours. It may be mentioned here that mosquito larvae take 7 to 10 days to become adult mosquitoes. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata BoseThey said water accumulated in garbage, discarded plastic cups, used tyres and wreckage of vehicles serve as potential breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. Senior civic officials urged the residents to ensure that the overhead tanks and underground reservoirs remain properly covered and plastic cups are not strewn around. “We carry out awareness campaigns urging cooperation of the residents. The majority of them are found to be cooperating with KMC, but there are persons who do not cover the underground reservoirs and overhead tanks properly. To combat dengue, cooperation is required from people coming from all walks of life,” the officials said. The Haskell functional programming language is moving from Phabricator to GitLab. Last Saturday, Haskell Consultant Ben Gamari listed down some details about the move in a mail. It started with a proposal to move to GitLab A few weeks back, Gamari wrote to the Haskell mailing list about moving the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC) development infrastructure to GitLab. The original proposal wasn’t complete enough to be used but did provide a small test instance to experiment on. The staging URL https://gitlab.staging.haskell.org is ready to use. While this is not the final version of the migration, it does have most of the features a user would expect. Trac tickets are fully imported, including attachments Continuous integration (CI) is available via CircleCI The mirrors of all boot libraries are present Users can also login using their GitHub credentials if they choose to Issues in the migration There are also a few issues listed by Gamari that needs to be worked on: Timestamps associated with ticket open and close events aren’t accurate Some of the milestone changes have problems on being imported Currently, CircleCI fails when forked Trac Wiki pages aren’t imported as of now Gamari said that the listed issues have either been resolved in the import tool or are in-progress to be resolved. The goal of this staging instance is to let contributors gain experience using GitLab and identify any obstacles in the eventual migration. Developers need to note that any comments, merge requests, or issues created on the temporary instance may not be preserved. The focus is on identifying workflows that will become harder under GitLab and ways to improve on them, pending issues in importing Trac, and areas that do not have documentation. Why the move to GitLab? The did not choose GitHub as stated by Gamari in another mail: “Its feature set is simply insufficient enough to handle the needs of a larger project like GHC”. The move to GitLab is due to a number of reasons. Phacility, the company that owns Phabricator has now closed support to non paying customers As Phalicity now focuses on paying customers, open-source parts used by GHC seem half finished Phabricator tool Harbormaster causing breaking CI Their surveys indicated developers leaning towards Git rather than the PHP tool Arcanist used by Phabricator The final migration will happen in about two weeks and the date mentioned is December 18.
