Drake won game one by a score of 4-0 before holding off SIU, 5-3, in the second game as the Bulldogs improved to 19-11 and 9-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference with their third-straight MVC sweep. Drake received outstanding pitching from sophomore Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) and senior Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) on Sunday. Newman started the first game and then closed out the second game for her first save of the season. McKinnon pitched 5.2 innings in game two and allowed just one run on six hits while striking out four and walking three. She earned the win to improve to 5-5 on the season. In the first game, Newman was dominant in the circle with her second-straight complete game. She allowed just one hit while striking out 13 and working around five walks and two hit by pitches. With the win, Newman improved to 14-5 overall in the circle. Drake benefited from an SIU (20-11, 5-3 MVC) miscue in the first inning for its first run of the game. Freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) hit a ball to centerfielder Mary Ann Patterson, who lost in the ball in the sun as leadoff hitter Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) came all the way around from first base to make the score 1-0. Later in the fourth inning, Pena added to Drake’s lead with a bases load walk to bring in one run and the next batter, Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) sent a bouncer up the middle between the shortstop and second baseman to push the Bulldogs’ lead to 4-0. Freshman Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.), Pena and Smith paced the offense with two hits each. Pena and Smith each drove in two runs while Wright scored a pair of runs. In the second game, Drake scored four runs in the second inning with all the runs coming with two outs. Freshman Gabbie Jonas’ (Omaha, Neb.) groundout moved sophomore Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) and junior Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) into scoring position at second and third base. Finneran reached on a walk and Alexander was hit by a pitch. With the runners in scoring position, Wright ripped the first of three-consecutive run-scoring singles. Frank then followed with her own and junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) had the final RBI hit as Drake led 4-0 after two. In fifth inning, junior Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa) added to the Bulldogs’ lead with a nice piece of hitting as she punched a single into the outfield to bring in Pena. SIU managed to score one run in the third off McKinnon before getting two off Newman in the seventh. Newman was able to bounce with a game-ending strikeout as the Salukis stranded a pair of runners to end the game. Newman allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings with three strikeouts to pick up the save. In the second game, Wright led the offense with three hits and two RBI while five other Bulldogs had at least one hit. Drake returns to Buel Field on Tuesday to host in-state foe Iowa State at 5 p.m.Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
