Queensland break 26-year record but at a cost

first_imgBy BEN HARRISQueensland will have a chance to defend their women’s open crown from 2012 as they won the second State of Origin match against New South Wales on Saturday morning at Sunshine Coast Stadium. However, the 8-3 win has come at a cost with key player Kim Sue See injuring herself after she had scored Queensland’s fifth touchdown.Sue See was escorted off the field by medical staff and did not return to the field.Although it seemed to not have mattered that she was missing as Queensland hammered the southern neighbours by five touchdowns. It was Queensland’s biggest winning margin in the women’s open division, beating a 26-year record that was set in their 5-1 victory on the Gold Coast.Queensland got out to a 2-0 lead with touchdowns to Catherine Sargent and Jemma Mi Mi.New South Wales fought back with back-to-back touchdowns in two minutes to level the scores at half-time.The visitors hit the lead for the first time when Louise Winchester scored her third touchdown of the series. However that was the last joy for New South Wales as Queensland’s Peta Rogerson, Brooke Walker and Sue See stepped up.Walker was the first to score then Sarah Spacie put Queensland back in front at 4-3.Sue See scored then was taken off before the job was finished off by Spacie, Hayley Maddick and Kate McCarthy as they scored touchdowns. The third game will be played at 4.15pm today.QUEENSLAND 8 (Sarah Spacie 2, Brooke Walker, Catherine Sargent, Hayley Maddick, Kim Sue See, Jemma Mi Mi, Kate McCarthy touchdowns) def NEW SOUTH WALES 3 (Samantha Rodgers, Kristin Boss, Louise Winchester touchdowns).
