first_img Sept. 2, 2007Box Score  FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The UWF Volleyball team swept thru the competition in Alaska, with a third straight 3-0 win, late Saturday night. This time, Hawaii-Hilo was the opponent, and Coach Melissa Wolter had said she “expect(s) an interesting match tonight, they line up well with us, and I expect some long rallies.” She appeared to be right on, as once again, a scrappy opponent had the Argos on the ropes in game one, but the UWF women rallied to win at 32-30. The momentum was too strong, and UWF put the match away in three straight.Much like the afternoon game vs. Alaska Fairbanks, UWF trailed almost all of game 1, only to edge out a victory. Each time they followed up by maintaining the lead throughout games two and three, and ended up with a three game sweep. The Argos won all 9 games (sets) in the three matches in Alaska, and have only dropped one game out of 22 played thus far this season. The victory moves UWF to 7-0 on the season, while Hawaii-Hilo dropped to 3-4. Similar to the two previous matches, the Argos spread the offensive punch around. Kimberly Clark (Jr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.), Luciana Rapach (Jr. / Brazil), Chelsea Wilhoite (Fr. / Jacksonville, Fla.), Isabela Gualberto (Sr. / Brazil), and Louann Rusch (So. / Homestead, Fla.) all had solid Attack Percentages. This is a tribute to setter Madeline Gonzalez (Jr. / Puerto Rico) for rotating the offense around with great ball control.Gonzalez was the tournament MVP, and finished the tournament with 122 Assists. Kimberly Clark, with 36 Kills, and Luciana Rapach, with 21 kills and 31 digs, also made the All-Tournament team for UWF. The Argos had three of the seven All-Tournament selections. Jessica King and Jessica Hill of Alaska-Fairbanks, Fabiene Seben of Hawaii-Hilo, and Katie Norkunas of Humboldt State rounded out the Tournament Awards.Next up for the Argos is the Argonaut Regional Cross-over next weekend in Pensacola. UWF plays Emporia State at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 7th, then takes on Rollins and Tampa on Saturday, and finishes with Florida Southern on Sunday. In all, 23 Matches will take place in the “Cross-over” event. Tampa and Florida Southern were both ranked in the pre-season top 5, while Emporia State is perennially one of the top teams in the South Central Region. Expect some outstanding Volleyball matchups next weekend in the UWF Fieldhouse. Print Friendly Version Share Argonaut Volleyball Finishes Clean Sweep in Alaska, now 7-0last_img
